Pistol Shrimp Games Adds the Finishing Touches to Free Stars: Children of Infinity

The wait is almost over for fans of classic science fiction adventures. Pistol Shrimp Games is now putting the finishing touches on Free Stars: Children of Infinity, the long-awaited sequel to The Ur-Quan Masters, with a Steam release coming soon.

Inspired by the optimistic “golden age” of science fiction, Free Stars: Children of Infinity promises to combine exploration, diplomacy, arcade-style space combat and rich storytelling in a galaxy packed with mystery. Rather than focusing solely on building empires or conquering worlds, the game places players in the captain’s chair of an ambitious expedition into the unknown, where every decision can shape the fate of the universe. After the events of the Ur-Quan Masters, and the huge and dynamic universe they previously made, I honestly can’t wait!

Set three years after the defeat of the dreaded Ur-Quan Masters, the story begins with a disturbing discovery. A mysterious breach in HyperSpace has appeared far beyond the known frontier, threatening the very fabric of the galaxy. As captain of a New Alliance of Free Stars expedition, it falls to you to investigate the phenomenon before it is too late.

What follows should be a true space adventure in every sense of the word. Hundreds of star systems and thousands of procedurally generated planets are waiting to be explored, each hiding valuable resources, strange environments, dangerous hazards and unexpected discoveries. Every jump into the unknown is promised to bring the possibility of uncovering something entirely new.

Of course, no great science fiction adventure would be complete without memorable alien species, and Free Stars: Children of Infinity should certainly deliver, considering how brilliant the Ur-Quan Masters was. Players will encounter dozens of intelligent civilisations, each with their own personalities, cultures and motives. Some will become trusted allies, others may prove dangerous enemies, while a few are simply delightfully bizarre. Every encounter will offer meaningful choices, allowing players to negotiate, cooperate, intimidate or, when diplomacy fails, prepare for battle.

Combat remains one of the series’ defining features. Fans of The Ur-Quan Masters will immediately recognise the fast-paced, inertia-based ship battles that made the original such a classic. Early release footage of the battles looks excellent!

This time around, players will command more than thirty unique starships, each with its own weapons, abilities and handling characteristics. Learning the strengths and weaknesses of every vessel becomes just as important as quick reactions during battle. I’m delighted to see the Thraddash Torch in there. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the violent rhino-dudes.

For those who simply want to enjoy the story, combat is only one option. Battles can sometimes be avoided through negotiation, escape or clever decision-making, while the optional Cyborg Mode allows an AI to take control during combat if players prefer to focus on exploration and narrative.

The game is said to expand beyond its predecessor with seamless online co-operative play, allowing friends to join the adventure together as they explore distant worlds and unravel the mystery surrounding HyperSpace. Competitive players have not been forgotten either, with the return of Super Melee, the beloved standalone combat mode. Alongside classic one-on-one battles, the new game introduces additional multiplayer modes and larger engagements, giving players plenty of opportunities to test their skills, and it’s been hinted that there will even be a co-operative mode!

One particularly exciting addition is full modding support. Pistol Shrimp Games has built the game with community creativity in mind, allowing players to create new ships, new creatures, entirely new adventures, or even completely different games using the provided tools. For a community that has kept The Ur-Quan Masters alive for many years, this opens the door to an almost limitless amount of future content.

Perhaps what makes Free Stars: Children of Infinity stand out most is its tone. While many modern science fiction games lean towards bleak or dystopian settings, this adventure embraces the sense of wonder that defined classic space exploration stories.I’m looking forward to a universe filled with hope, curiosity, humour and discovery, where strange alien races, impossible technologies and unforgettable adventures await around every corner.

With development now entering its final stages, Pistol Shrimp Games is focusing on polishing gameplay, refining the player experience and ensuring everything is ready for launch. After years of work, the finish line is finally in sight.

If you’re a fan of story-driven science fiction, space exploration, memorable alien encounters or the legendary The Ur-Quan Masters, this is one title you’ll want to keep firmly on your radar.

Free Stars: Children of Infinity will be launching on Steam soon, and you can wishlist it today to be notified as soon as it becomes available. If the game captures even a fraction of the charm, humour and sense of adventure that made its predecessor a classic, players are in for something very special.
