Mighty Oak Brewing Company – Maldon

Mighty Oak: Maldon microbrewery, High Street taproom and Essex-hopped ales on the way Subhead: Cask and bottled real ales from Spital Road since 2001, plus a micropub on the High Street, and a Markshall Estate hop partnership aiming for beers this autumn

THE MIGHTY OAK BREWING CO. LIMITED (Companies House 03091052) was incorporated on 14 August 1995 and remains Active under SIC 11050 (manufacture of beer). The brewery and shop for collections are at 21a West Station Yard, Spital Road, Maldon CM9 6TR; the registered office is at 14b in the same yard. The Mighty Oak Tap Room sits at 10 High Street, Maldon CM9 5PJ.

Founded by John Boyce, the business has been brewing in Essex since 1996 and relocated to the Spital Road site in Maldon in January 2001. It produces cask and bottled real ales, and some spirits distilled from beer wort. Sales run through the trade and direct to consumer via the brewery shop, online ordering, delivery and the High Street micropub.

Its flagship is Oscar Wilde, a 3.7% ABV dark mild. The BBC reported that CAMRA named it Supreme Champion Beer of Britain in 2011; it is still sold. Maldon Nub News (10 June 2024) also cites a Gold award as Champion Mild of East Anglia in 2023. Maldon Gold, a golden ale dating from 2001, has likewise been CAMRA-awarded according to that Nub News feature.

Production and distribution figures should be read as reported by Nub News in June 2024: roughly 800,000 pints a year, supply to more than 450 pubs, bars and shops, nine permanent brews, and weekly specials. The same feature notes Seax Spiced Rum and Wilde Samphire Gin distilled from beer wort.

Brewery collections are Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, closed at weekends and on bank holidays. Taproom hours, as published for the micropub, are closed Monday; Tuesday–Wednesday 4–10pm; Thursday 4–11pm; Friday–Saturday noon–11pm; Sunday noon–9pm. The taproom phone number is 01621 853892.

In early September 2026, the Gazette reported a partnership with Markshall Estate, near Coggeshall, growing Essex hops, varieties Boadicea and First Gold, for what were described as the first Essex-hopped ales in more than 100 years. Beers from that project were expected in early to mid-October. Gill Crawford is a director of the brewing company; this report does not invent or attribute staff quotations.

For local readers, the practical picture is straightforward: collect from Spital Road on weekdays, drink on the High Street when the taproom is open, or order online and by delivery, and watch for the Markshall-hopped releases if Essex provenance matters to your pint.
