How to come up with blog ideas

One of the biggest hurdles to starting a blog is coming up with fresh and interesting content ideas on a regular basis. If you’re feeling stuck, here are some tips to jump-start your brainstorming:

1. Keep a running list of ideas.
Carry a small notebook or use the notes app on your phone to jot down ideas as they come to you. This is helpful for two reasons: first, you’ll always have material to write about when you’re ready to start blogging; and second, it can be inspiring to look back on your list and see how your interests have changed and developed over time.

2. Look for inspiration in everyday life.
You never know when something will spark an idea for a blog post. Pay attention to the world around you – what TV shows or movies are people talking about? What’s happening in politics or current events? What controversial topics are people arguing about on social media? By keeping your finger on the pulse of popular culture, you’ll always have something new to write about.

3. Ask your friends and family what they’d like to read about.
Chances are, if you’re struggling to come up with ideas for your blog, other people are struggling with the same thing. Ask the people in your life what kinds of content they’d like to see from you – odds are, they’ll be more than happy to share their thoughts!

4. Check out other blogs in your niche.
See what topics are popular among other bloggers in your field, and try writing about those topics from your own unique perspective. Not only will this help you come up with new ideas, but it will also give you an opportunity to build relationships with other bloggers in your niche!

My blog on my Chan Walrus website just features my occasional rambling about things I’m working on, computer games I play and things that interest me. I also have a work blog on my digital marketing website!

How to set up your blog

Creating a blog is easy. However, if you want to make it successful, there are a few printing basics you should know. By following these simple steps, you will be on your way to becoming a blogging expert in no time!

1) Choose your platform: WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, Medium to name just a few. I always recommend WordPress because I started with it, and it helped me get where I am today. Tried and tested, it’s the best.
2) Choose your domain name: This will be your blog’s web address (ex. sect.news).
3) Set up hosting: This is where your blog’s files will be stored (on a hosting company’s servers). I recommend using Namecheap hosting, as their customer support is the best, and their prices are amazing.
4) Install WordPress: If you chose WordPress as your platform, you will need to install it on your hosting account.
5) Choose a theme: This will be the design of your blog (ex. classic, minimalist, modern, etc.).
6) Install plugins: These are optional features that can enhance your blog (ex. contact form, social media sharing buttons, etc.).
7) Write your first post: Congrats! You are now ready to start sharing your voice with the world.

How to promote your blog

There are many ways to promote your blog and reach a wider audience. Some of the most effective methods include search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, and guest posting. I’ve written a detailed blog on killing it with SEO, which will really help you get started!

SEO is the process of optimizing your website for Google search with the goal of earning higher web traffic levels. To do this, you need to use key phrases and target keywords throughout your site in order to improve your ranking in search results. You can also use SEO to generate more traffic from social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. (I really hate Twitter though because I think the platform is useless and overrun with bots.) You can also connect with other bloggers and influencers in your niche in order to collaborate and cross-promote each other’s work.

Guest posting is another effective way to reach a new audience and promote your blog. This involves writing articles for other websites or blogs in your industry. This is a great way to get exposure for your own website while also providing valuable content for another site’s readership.

How to make money from your blog

There are a few different ways to make money from your blog. You can sell products or services, accept advertising, or use affiliate marketing.

Selling products or services is a great way to generate revenue from your blog. You can sell physical products, digital products, or even services. If you have a niche audience, you may be able to find products or services that are particularly well suited to them. For example, if you have a blog about gardening, you could sell gardening tools, plants, or even offer gardening services.

Affiliate marketing is another option for monetizing your blog. With affiliate marketing, you promote products or services on your blog and earn a commission when someone clicks through and makes a purchase. This can be a great way to monetize if you have a blog with high quality content that attracts an engaged audience.

Advertising is another way to make money from your blog. You can either sell advertising space on your blog directly, or work with an advertising network. Ad networks will place ads on your blog and pay you based on the traffic they generate. This can be a great way to monetize if you have a high traffic blog. I make enough money through my Adsense to pay for all my websites. So this is key to keeping yourself earning!

Tips for successful blogging

Find your niche. Before you start writing, take some time to think about what you want your blog to be about. What are you passionate about? What do you want to share with the world? Once you’ve narrowed down your focus, it will be easier to come up with topics to write about.

Update regularly. One of the keys to a successful blog is consistency. Try to post new content on a regular schedule so that your readers know when to expect new posts. If you can’t commit to updating frequently, consider starting a quarterly or monthly blog instead of a weekly one.

Interact with your readers. A blog is not a one-way street – it’s meant to be interactive! Respond to comments and questions from your readers. Ask them for their opinions on topics you’re considering writing about. Not only will this help create a community around your blog, but it will also give you ideas for new content.

Share your posts. Once you hit publish, don’t forget to share your post with your social network! Use Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram to let people know that there’s new content on your site. You can also use tools like SumoMe or Social Warfare to make it easy for people to share your posts on their favorite social media platform. I use ContentStudio, it’s the best way to share out to multiple platforms.

These are just a few tips for successful blogging – but ultimately, the best way to learn is by trial and error. So get out there and start writing!
